A Ramp Planner’s responsibilities include keeping track of aircraft at the time of arrival, coordination of ground operation activities, maintaining flight schedules, dispatching ground service units like cleaners and baggage handlers, aircraft operations time schedules, monitoring and overseeing ramp operations activities, updating inconsistencies in ramp operation activities to operation head, ensuring that the services meet quality standards and procedures, developing and maintaining operating procedure of cargo handling activities, and providing service within the set aviation standards
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Monitors radar unit and radios continuously for aircraft arrival information to ascertain the need for passenger transportation and scope of overall ramp area traffic
- Plan upcoming aircraft traffic flow and schedule/dispatch mobile lounges and plane mates.
- Controls movements of aircraft in aircraft ramp area, ensuring proper sequencing and separation; assigns gates and parking to arriving aircraft in accordance with pre-arranged plans, making adjustments for unscheduled flights; and, approves requests for push backs of aircraft into taxi lanes in ramp area ensuring an orderly flow of traffic and prevention of delays.
- Maintains constant awareness of airfield activities.
- Responsible for the provision of ramp services including:
- Ground Handling Services including and not limited to aircraft towing, push-back, air start, marshaling, cabin cleaning and toilet servicing
- Baggage handling
- Aircraft stand planning
- Passengers with reduced mobility assistance
- Aircraft dispatch process
- Air side FOD (Foreign Object Debris) sweeper, FOD boss and patrols
- Manage the dispatch process ensuring all department policies and procedures are adhered to in a safe and efficient manner.
- Directs parking.
- Maintains mobile lounge locator board, mobile lounge/radio malfunction log; and, forwards mobile lounge availability status to airport operations department daily.
- Advises personnel on current/pending ground traffic patterns in the ramp area and warns on problems, as appropriate.
- Uses radios to gives instructions to pilots on aircraft push backs, routes for taxi, gate assignments, advising of ground delays, ground problems, ramp problems, construction issues and emergency situations.
- Develops and coordinates aircraft taxi routes and parking during periods of snow and ice.
- Maintains liaison with FAA and IAD Airport Operations personnel to coordinate unusual or emergency situations.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- At least 2 years of experience as a ramp service person required
- Strong communication and organization skills

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must maintain mobility to work in an Air Traffic Control type tower; ability to lean over work consoles/equipment to conduct panoramic surveillance of aircraft; and to drive a motor vehicle to and from adjacent ramp control facilities. Distant and near vision correctable to 20/20 in each eye, with normal color vision. Speech to communicate effectively in English. Hearing to demonstrate no chronic disease of the ear that might interfere with the comfortable use of standard or cordless headsets. No hearing loss in either ear more than 30 decibels in the 500, 1000, or 2000 Hz ranges.
