    What Line Service Technicians Do:
    A Line Service Technician provides ground support to aircraft as they arrive and depart. This member of the ground crew can be involved in turning planes around to get them ready for the next trip, handling some customer service topics, and keeping the environment safe and orderly.

    How to Become a Line Service Technician:
    Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, High School diploma or equivalent and may be required to pass pre-employment background check and drug screening. Although not required, there are trade schools offering training specifically for this profession. Courses will teach you the basics of working with airlines and you will learn firsthand the types of work you’ll be expected to master.

    Job Outlook:
    With time, line personnel can advance to supervisory roles. Employees who pursue degrees or certifications can receive opportunities to advance to hire paying positions within the company that are more specialized.

    Job Description:
    A Line Service Technician prepares aircraft for flight, services fuel and oil tanks and assists crew and passengers with luggage and transportation requests. He also reads and interprets maintenance manuals, maintains repairs logs, conducts frequent inspections and inspects airframes for potential defects.

    This is a Non-Exempt position.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Greet, park, tow, move and marshal aircraft arriving or departing ramp area.
    • Provide lavatory and water service as requested.
    • Fuel/de-ice aircraft as requested.
    • Provide shuttle service for passengers/crew as required.
    • Assist with customer service duties as required.
    • Provide oil and oxygen service for aircraft as requested.
    • Assist passengers and/or crew with baggage/cargo as needed.
    • Assist with general cleaning and clearing of debris from ramp, building and customer areas.
    • Assist with wing-walking duties as required.
    • Observes all safety, environmental and general housekeeping rules and policies.
    • May preform other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

    • High School diploma or equivalent.
    • Valid driver’s license; CDL license considered a plus.
    • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
    • Ability to perform simple arithmetic.
    • Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds above the head. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, night vision and distance vision. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
