As a ramp services agent you work for the airport or for an airline that is based at or has a gate at a specific airport. At smaller airports, ramp agents may work as line service technicians for private terminals that cater to smaller aircraft known as FBO’s or Fixed Base Operators. In either situation it is a fast paced job and safety must always be considered.
A ramp services agent does a variety of tasks including loading and unloading baggage, marshalling (directing aircraft into a parking spot using hand signals), operation of tugs and other vehicles and heavy equipment, fuels aircraft, services the lav and potable drinking water and a host of other duties as well.
If you want to work around airplanes, its a great place to work. But there are challenges you need to be aware of.
Working conditions can be difficult so you have to be hardy enough to deal with working out of doors. Weather is constantly changing and you’ll have to deal with heat in the summer and cold in the winter. You’ll also have to work in the rain or snow at times. This job is a physical job and being able to lift heavy items is a must.
Ramp Services Agent – Qualifications
To qualify for a ramp services agent job you’ll need to have your high school diploma or GED. You need to be able to lift up to 50-75 pounds often and you must be flexible with your schedule. You must also be willing to work in constantly changing weather.
