The term “aircraft mechanic license” is widely used, but the credential that opens most maintenance career doors is the FAA mechanic certificate with Airframe and Powerplant ratings – commonly called an A&P. It is the qualification employers look for when hiring technicians to inspect, repair, and return aircraft to service. For someone planning a long-term aviation career, choosing how to earn that certificate is often more consequential than choosing a first job.

This aircraft mechanic license guide explains what the A&P certificate covers, the main ways to qualify, and the career decisions worth making before you commit time and tuition.

What an aircraft mechanic license actually allows you to do

An FAA-certificated mechanic may hold an Airframe rating, a Powerplant rating, or both. The Airframe rating covers aircraft structures and systems, including landing gear, flight controls, hydraulic systems, electrical components, cabin systems, and sheet metal. The Powerplant rating covers engines, propellers, and their related systems.

Most employers prefer applicants with both ratings. A mechanic who holds the full A&P certificate can work across a broader range of maintenance tasks and is generally more competitive for airline, business aviation, repair station, and general aviation roles.

The certificate does not mean you can sign off every maintenance action immediately. Your employer, the type of aircraft, company procedures, and your documented training all affect what work you can perform and approve. Early-career technicians typically work under established inspection and quality-control processes while building practical experience.

FAA eligibility for an A&P certificate

To qualify for an FAA mechanic certificate, you must generally be at least 18 years old, be able to read, write, speak, and understand English, and meet the experience or education requirements for the rating you want. You must also pass FAA knowledge tests followed by oral and practical exams.

There are two primary routes: attending an FAA-approved aviation maintenance technician school or qualifying through documented hands-on experience.

The aviation maintenance school route

An FAA-approved school offers a structured curriculum in general maintenance subjects plus airframe and powerplant instruction. Many programs are designed to be completed in about 18 to 24 months, although schedules differ by school and whether you attend full time.

For many students, this is the most direct route because the school provides the required instruction, lab work, tools, and preparation for FAA testing. It also creates a clear graduation timeline and may offer recruiting access to airlines, maintenance providers, manufacturers, and local aviation employers.

The trade-off is cost. Tuition, fees, tools, test preparation, transportation, and lost income while attending school can add up. Before enrolling, compare total program cost rather than tuition alone, ask about graduation and test pass rates, and find out which employers recruit from the program.

The work-experience route

The FAA also allows qualifying practical experience in maintenance work instead of school. In general, you need 18 months of appropriate experience for either the Airframe or Powerplant rating, or 30 months of concurrent experience for both ratings.

This path can make financial sense if you can secure an entry-level maintenance position, military maintenance assignment, or supervised role that provides relevant experience. However, it is not simply a matter of spending time near airplanes. The work must be appropriate to the rating sought, and your experience needs to be documented clearly enough for an FAA inspector to evaluate.

The experience route may reduce tuition costs, but it can take longer to organize and leaves more responsibility on you to fill knowledge gaps before the exams. It is often a strong option for people already working around aircraft, while a school may be more efficient for career changers starting from zero.

The A&P testing process

After completing an approved program or receiving authorization based on experience, you will take three FAA knowledge tests: General, Airframe, and Powerplant. These are computer-based exams that assess regulations, maintenance practices, aircraft systems, troubleshooting, and technical knowledge.

Passing the written tests is only part of the process. You must then complete oral and practical examinations with a designated mechanic examiner. The examiner asks technical questions and has you perform representative tasks. You may be asked to interpret maintenance data, use measuring tools, inspect a component, demonstrate safety practices, or explain why a repair is acceptable.

The oral and practical portion matters because maintenance employers need more than test-taking ability. They need technicians who can work methodically, use approved data, recognize when a discrepancy requires escalation, and document work accurately.

A good preparation strategy combines test-prep study with hands-on repetition. Memorizing questions can help identify weak areas, but it is not enough if you cannot explain a system or safely complete a basic maintenance task. Build familiarity with manuals, torque procedures, safety wiring, electrical troubleshooting, and inspection logic.

How long does it take to become an aircraft mechanic?

A full-time FAA-approved school program commonly takes 18 to 24 months. The work-experience route can take at least 30 months for both ratings, assuming you are gaining qualifying airframe and powerplant experience at the same time.

Your personal timeline can be longer if you attend school part time, need to work while training, delay exams after graduation, or retest an unsuccessful exam section. The fastest path is not automatically the best one. A program with stronger lab time, employer relationships, and exam preparation may create better job options than a shorter program with limited hands-on training.

If your goal is airline maintenance, look for programs and entry-level employers that expose you to turbine aircraft, formal documentation practices, and shift-based maintenance operations. If you want to work in general aviation, a smaller shop can provide wide exposure to piston engines, avionics, inspections, and customer-facing work. Both paths build valuable skills, but the day-to-day work is very different.

What the license costs and how to budget for it

The cost of earning an A&P varies sharply by location, school type, and living situation. Community colleges may offer lower tuition than private technical schools, while private programs may have more frequent start dates or accelerated schedules. Neither option is automatically better.

Your budget should account for more than classroom tuition. Plan for tools, safety equipment, books or digital course materials, FAA knowledge tests, oral and practical exam fees, transportation, housing, and income you may give up while training. Financial aid may be available through qualifying schools, but compare loan obligations against realistic starting pay in your target market.

It is also worth asking whether an employer offers tuition assistance, paid apprenticeship-style training, relocation support, or a tool allowance. A lower starting wage can sometimes be offset by better training, predictable advancement, or a pathway to specialized work.

Choosing the right first maintenance job

An A&P certificate is portable, but your first job will shape your technical foundation. Airlines may offer structured procedures, travel benefits, union representation in some locations, and clear progression. The trade-off can include overnight shifts, weekend work, large-team environments, and a narrower task range early on.

Repair stations can provide experience with component overhaul, heavy checks, modifications, or specialty work. Corporate aviation may involve high standards of presentation, varied aircraft, and smaller teams. General aviation shops often give new technicians broad practical exposure, though pay and benefits can vary substantially by employer and region.

When comparing offers, ask what aircraft you will work on, how new technicians are trained, whether the role includes inspection exposure, how overtime is handled, and what advancement has looked like for recent hires. Starting pay matters, but quality mentorship and real troubleshooting experience can compound over a career.

The next credential: Inspection Authorization

After gaining experience, some A&P mechanics pursue an Inspection Authorization, or IA. This is not required for entry-level maintenance jobs. It is an advanced authorization that allows eligible mechanics to perform and approve certain inspections and major repair or alteration work within FAA rules.

An IA can be especially valuable in general aviation, owner-operated aircraft maintenance, and independent repair work. Eligibility includes holding an A&P certificate for at least three years and meeting recent activity requirements, among other FAA conditions. It is a later-career decision, not something to delay your first job for.

Build a career, not just a certificate

The A&P is a practical credential with long-term value because aircraft need recurring inspection, repair, and compliance work regardless of economic cycles. Still, the license is the beginning of your professional development, not the finish line. Type-specific training, avionics knowledge, composite repair skills, leadership ability, and strong maintenance documentation can all raise your value over time.

Choose the route that gives you a realistic path to passing the exams and entering the kind of maintenance environment you want. Once you are on the hangar floor, stay curious, ask experienced technicians why a procedure matters, and treat every task as a chance to build the judgment that aviation maintenance careers depend on.
